About
The African Development Bank (AfDB) is a multilateral development finance institution established in 1964, with its headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. The Bank comprises 81 member states, including 54 regional (African) countries and 27 non-regional member countries from the Americas, Europe, and Asia.
Mission & Impact
The AfDB's mission is to spur sustainable economic development and social progress in its regional member countries, thus contributing to poverty reduction. The Bank achieves this through:
- Infrastructure Development: Financing major transport, energy, water, and ICT projects across the continent, including the Mombasa-Nairobi-Addis Ababa highway corridor and the Inga Dam Phase III.
- Private Sector Support: Through its private sector arm, the African Development Fund, providing loans, equity investments, and guarantees to businesses operating in Africa.
- Technical Assistance: Offering policy advice, capacity building, and knowledge products to help countries design and implement effective development strategies.
- Human Capital Development: Investing in education, health, and skills development programs, with a focus on youth and women.
In 2025, the AfDB committed over $8 billion in new financing across more than 200 projects, making it one of the largest sources of development finance on the continent.
